"There is always a debate when redoing an old house whether to consider it a restoration or renovation. It is my understanding that a restoration is a pure, line-for-line replication of a space or object, as nearly as possible to its original state. A renovation is a rebuilding of a space or object, with less attention paid to authenticity than to making it new again. As I embarked on fixing up the new old house, I realized I had to combine the two."
Martha Stewart, "New Old House," 1992
